The company
The Fonbet brand was founded in 1994 and is one of Europe’s oldest online bookmakers, present in more than ten countries with millions of active accounts. The technology platform is its own — hence an app lighter than many competitors’ “white labels” (app review).
Entry into Greece
The Greek market opened with the 2020 reform (Law 4635/2019): seven-year licences, €3m for betting and €2m for casino, strict conditions. Plumo Limited (Nicosia) applied and the HGC approved two licences: HGC-000003-LH (sports betting) and HGC-000004-LH (online casino), valid until May 2028. Fonbet is thus the first major new entrant since the reform.
What the licence means for you
- Tax withheld automatically (0/7.5/20%) — calculator.
- Player balances in an account separate from operating funds.
- Self-exclusion via the HGC central register — applies at all licensed operators.
- Complaints to the HGC if the company doesn’t reply within 15 days.
- Greek payment methods (IRIS, cards) without workarounds.
- Advertising under the HGC code — no “guaranteed winnings”, nothing aimed at minors.
The strategy in Greece
Fonbet entered with three choices that set it apart: a sign-up bonus with no deposit and 1x rollover instead of big amounts at 35x (promotions), low margins on big events (3.9% Champions League — odds analysis) and Greek-speaking Evolution live tables. The question for the coming years: whether it keeps its prices after the customer-acquisition phase.
The cons, for balance
A smaller casino than the big players (1,200 vs 3,000+), limited streaming (no Super League), no tiered VIP programme. All in the casino review.
